We hope this newsletter finds you, your families and colleagues
well during these unprecedented
times. 2020 has been a year like no-other in recent memory and
we appreciate the engagement we’ve had with many of our
customers in supporting the various transportation needs that
have arisen as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We will
continue those efforts as we monitor the overall health
situation closely across North America.
Given the unique challenges we are all facing, our team at
RideShark has been using this time to envision new and better
ways for us to work with our customers in a more dynamic and
collaborative way. We want to better demonstrate our leadership
as a TDM platform provider. With this in mind, we are excited to
have recently brought on Dr. Elliot Siemiatycki as our new Vice
President responsible for innovation and strategic initiatives
at RideShark.
Amongst other things, Elliot will be leading our customer
engagement activities by amplifying our outreach with more
regular newsletters, ecosystem webinars and platform learning
opportunities. We will be reaching out directly to our customers
over the coming weeks as Elliot gets settled in to make fuller
introductions and discuss some of the exciting product and
service improvements we’re making.
We hope you find this newsletter interesting and informative!

How RideShark uses Artificial Intelligence to enable
better commuting experiences
|
You’ve probably heard about how Artificial
Intelligence (AI) is transforming everything
from how new medical drugs are discovered to how
cars will become self-driving in the coming
years. While there is a fair bit of hype in the
marketplace and mainstream media about the use
of AI, it is certainly the case that new
AI-based methods such as Machine Learning (ML)
are increasingly being used to develop and
improve products and services.
|
Quick Primer
|
So what are AI and ML? AI is a broad scientific
field that is fundamentally about “making
computers
behave in ways that, until recently, we thought
required human intelligence” according to Andrew
Moore, Former-Dean of the School of Computer
Science
at Carnegie Mellon University. AI is difficult
to
define as its meaning and use has changed over
the
60+ years since the term was coined in 1956 by a
group of academic researchers.
AI has spawned a number of different branches
with related tools that can be used to achieve
particular outcomes – ML is the most well-known
of these sub-fields of AI. For Computer Science
pioneer Tom M. Mitchell, “Machine learning is
the study of computer algorithms that allow
computer programs to automatically improve
through experience.” A great example of ML in
action is when Netflix or Spotify suggest that
next great movie or song curated to exactly your
taste using advanced predictive algorithms. But
as anyone who uses these services knows, the
suggestions are often reasonably good over time
but not necessarily attuned to human mood or
emotional changes. These are some of the current
limitations of ML which AI scientists are aiming
to overcome.

AI and ML at RideShark
|
At RideShark our team of tech experts are always
looking to improve our platform and services
through use of cutting-edge technology. Our
platform uses ML techniques in everything from
predicting the best carpool matches based on
user preferences and travel parameters to
providing customized incentives to reward people
for making more active and sustainable mobility
choices. We also use it to verify the photos
that users include of themselves and their
vehicles on our platform to support safety and
trust between users. We believe ML tools should
work in the background to make mobility easier,
cheaper, safer and more sustainable but it
should never come with a compromise to safety,
security and privacy of individual users and
their data. As the transportation evolves with
the adoption of new technologies, RideShark will
be right there using these innovative tools to
achieve the best results for our customers.
